A Sign

If the sun rises
When the moon no longer shines
When the morning insects were flying
Whatever I am as a human being
The dream should be stopped
Veins and themselves must run
All already outlined by god

My eyes looked straight into the sky
How cool a warm morning
How beautiful the blue sky
How happy are the grateful birds
Really happy,
O my Lord, send down a piece of your happiness to this earthly servant
For those who yearn for affection

If you have sparkled the heavens into the earth
If the heavens of heaven have you given to the earth
If the love you have inserted into every human heart
Only gratitude should always be promised
So that love-love is never lost direction
That all this is coming and only for you, god

Cara Membuat Arang Sekam Padi

Gapoktan as food security system; study from Pasir Sakti-East Lampung

Pasir Sakti, a name never be forgotten, a village in East Lampung-Lampung Province that many lessons i have obtained. The farmers here have their superiority which able to be followed by many communities. It is not about a cultivation, plant variety, or technology they use, but this is about social modal that they package to answer their internal economic problems.

Pasir Sakti village is not a metropolitan village, mostly richman composition, or an industrial village, this village is just a little village with majority of farmers and fishermans who live there. Most of their rice fields are changed from marsh. Its situation is very high sun intencity, much of dush, and commonly as a simple family. Also located near to the coast.

In Pasir Sakti village, there is a Farmers Group Aliance (Gapoktan) with name Sumber Rejeki. This Gapoktan is leaded by a farmer called Mr. Sage. Fortunately his home is that i spend my time as my accomodation for five months later, therefore it is not difficult to find informations from him. Gapoktan consist of farmer groups (Poktan), while every Poktan has its member (farmer) who has rice field within same area. Farmers in a Poktan are like neighboring field, though their house's distance are far. In this case, Gapoktan Sumber Rejeki has 5 group members, every group consist of 25-30 farmers with 25 hectare of rice field wide average.

These Poktan and Gapoktan routinly are guided by BP3K, a guidance institution on agriculture, animal husbandry, and forestry. Each village is under an agricultural guid. By the way, Gapoktan and Poktan have strategic side in Indonesia agricultural development. With this group, beside as interaction forum, it is as well as place to study together, sharing, and optimalizing increasing productivity. Within group, every member has similar right to speak. They  also can cooperate particularly in plantation management, maintenance, water management, irigation, pest and diseases management, and many more.

There is an unique taken from Sumber Rejeki that can be rightfully prided. it is that they have a self food sufficient and food security system. Sumber Rejeki posseses a twice that being a reason to answer it, a money savings and rice barn. Both of them are collected from its members for every meeting twice weekly, and after harvesting for rice collection. the most honor is that it is not a huge collecting, when they make a meeting, every member (farmer) just contribute his money Rp20.000. while for rice contribution just 15 Kg of rice per hectare after harvesting. The meeting always become interesting because they always enter many other religious activities such as Yasinan, tahlilan, and so on to that.

Each member has his own right and obligation. Their obligation have been dercribed above, while the right is that they can borrow either money or rice in from barn in every time. After borrowing, every member have to return the charge, 15% for every loan. The paying for returning is not limited by time, they are free on the time. Except at the end of year becouse related with close book/close administration.

That is a strength of local wisdom on a community built for many years. An interview with Mr Sage said that the total of money saved at Sumber Rejeki Gapoktan is up to 80 millions rupiah, meanwhile the rice barn total for the rice up to several tons. That is incredible. I think if all villages Indonesia has do like Pasir Sakti has, we won’t get difficulty in food supply. Vulnurable food supply can be easily overcome without importing the rice from other countries. This is the other side from my expedition in developing soy bean commodity in East Lampung.

Social, Economy, and Cultural Reality within Agricultural Improvement

A change is a necessity and certainty. Every human being will always change, both social change, patterns of behavior, growth, social interaction, economy, education and many others. Every human must always be ready to accept the changes at everything they face. These changes can be either lead to kindness or even to evil. Some opinions state that the changes can be directed in order to direct to the goodness.

In directing change, often occur pros and cons in our society. Not a few among the people who reject a good chance we have provided. In my opinion, the phenomena not to accept is not without reason. These factors are caused by social, educational, political, experience, economics, perception, cultural and so many others.

This is what is happening in the village of Pasir Sakti Sakti Kec.Pasir Sakti, East Lampung, where I served as a conduit where the technology of IPB on water saturated soybean cultivation technology. Some people personally reject aid of new technology of planting soybean for several reasons. On the pretext that "I do not eat soy, I eat rice", "those are my own land, it's up to me to manage these", "what does not decay when planting soy", "who will buy soybean products", and "we've never plant soybeans, how if it fails ". the Community candidate for receiving program at least divided into three groups, receiving fully, hesitated, and refused. The group that received usually they are ever better educated, younger, open minded, and who has a better economic level.

In the process of change, especially change driven and contrary to community habit is a fairness if there are many rejections, although logically it will be guarded and helped. The express rejection is because it still happens a shadow over previous events bad or a shadow of failure. Before that they already have a close feeling so that they doesn’t new perceptions, even though it is logic. Thus, we need specific strategies to repair their views to slightly open talks.

One of ways that can be done to open their eyes is by analyzyng the problems becoming rejection reason to the program. If I look at the reality of what happened in Pasir Sakti, at least it is because of failure shadow with these new technologies, because they have never seen and experienced to plant soy. Fears combining with the affairs of their lives makes them blind new sight, and relatively safe not to take dare to risks. However, the big problem is that they become the expense of other farmers who receive the program. Because actually all farmers would believe if a program is already proven successful.

Deeply Socialization and approached personally I think indeed be the best way to open their minds about what will actually offered (door to door). At least by meet them directly, there will be negotiations and exchange of each other's views. In terms of program providers can find out the principal factor that makes the problem they do not accept, and on the receiver side will be heard directly detailed explanation of the program. Although we can’t be able to guarantee the end they would be willing. Communication technique here is crucial.

Farmers have always need evidence to change their maindset. Facts on the field, that our farmers generally low level of formal education and that they are elderly, so persuasion and example approach is the key. Before making a proof, indeed we need to invite them to believe with a bit of a player gambling, be courageous in taking risks to change for the better. Every life is a choice, and every choice has a consequence respectively.

It's really hard, because that they will do is whether the success or failure. All could be due to the classic factors that lurks every agricultural production, natuel. This is about their life and death, no wonder if they are very vigilant. However, we as a new science and technology carrier ceaselessly provide new understanding to them. Considering that they are elderly majority, who need a simple language for easy digestibility, although they are more experienced in the field.

Sisi Liburan

Lampung Traveler (English Version)

With Sulis (LPPM IPB)- Miss Sandra (IPB Lecturer)- Mr. Sage (Farmer)-
Resti (Partner)- Mr. Candra (IPB Lecturer)
Time is so fast, that finally brought me to the mainland across java island, Sumatera. Afer graduating, i got oportunity to join a program held by IPB-Ministry of Agriculture as assistant of increasing soy production by saturated water technology at the tidal area in East Lampung, Lampung Province. That was ultimately stay in Lampung for several months later, this is not a short time.

This is the first time i’d stayed at a new island for longer, even the first flight i did. Before that, i imagined the describtion of place i will occupy. Those are about environtmental farmer situation and hot sun radiation would burn my young skin. Unexpectedly, not all the imagination is the same as the real situation. I was placed at javanese transmigrant community, located on coast not far away with Bakauheni port. Socially, it’s really like at my house there. They are so friendly and welcome to my existance. But, two other things like radiation intencity and farmer condition are similar like what i have drawn. The intencity of sun radiation there can’t be underestimated.

The Environment here is not much different with conditions i have imagined before. They are javanes transmigrant from java island looking for occupation, then lived here within one specific community, finally being large district which consist of javanes as majority. That was like another javanes province out of java island.

The sun radiation intencity at midday is so high. Not only just by its temperature, but also about the high of light intencity from sun radiation to my eye, causing dazzled. That really cause my body to start doing many acivity outside. The hot wind mixed with white sand caused my skin feels sticky. Fortunately the water there was not really sticky, i think more camfortable. In addition, the existance of my agresive night friends (mosquitos) that attacked me nightly. This was the answer why finally Mrs Sage setted net arround my bad. In order to avoud malarial mosquito, hhehe naudzubillah.

Firstlly, that can be started was socializing to everyone and everywhere i met, as well as identified problems and analysed possibilities happen. I have met with Gapoktan leader, several farmers, PPL, TNI, and society there.  It was impressive because meeting with new persone would give new knowledges. I relized that my presence will be main attention to local community, so that way i have to put my self as good as possible. Exited, this may be as my laboratotium to lear how to be part of community in the future.

The more other exited about farmers life is that they are not always saffered. As in several media and other public attantions, the farmers looked as always related with backward, uneducated person, poorman, screaming ask help, unknown the newest technology, never smiling, having no future, and like unprospect job. They are seldom reported by some public media just when there was a drought, flood, pests and diseases outbreak, hopperburn, even drastically lower price therefore all of those make emphaty to every human looking at. However one side i have found about farmer socioeconomy was unique to be discussed.

Although i have just lived within farmer house for several days, at least there are several things can be concluded. Mr Sage, a leader of Gapoktan at Pasir Sakti Village in East Lampung where i live there for five month later has simple life condition, religius, and hard fight.Dislike that farmer never smiling, this profession even makes them fully smile. Why? While i interacted with him in every condition, i never heard him and his wife complain to their life condition. Tomplaining to the goverment aid and something related with agriculture, of course, was ever occured.  However he never complains as his land-water manager position in His earth. He always funny, energic, fully thanks to Allah. Since morning, he went to his field and was back at noon for meeting his wife. Then they lunch together with a delicious simple meal. At noon, they took rest and enjoyed at house beside of breathing  natural air flowing from the jungle. After that they teach holy quran to neighboring children everyday. Smilling, regarding, and friendlying  have been an obligation according to them, farmers in East Lampung.

Agriculture is about our society culture and life. Agricultural Food has become part of the life, the fight, the service, the dedication, the soul, and the challenge for the hero of food fighters  in our beloved nation. My presence as farmer assistant here is wishly hoped can help them to widen their smile. As academiciant, to be useful for many people around us is one of unprice thing. No need to spectacular found in the world unless can’t be implemented among our society. I am part of their soul, a regarder in our land,  who manage our father land, for everyone, no care to bandits and ghosts at capital town far there.

Lampung Traveler

Bersama Sulis (LPPM), Bu sandra (Dosen IPB), Pak Sage (Petani),

Ternak Cacing, Cukup Menarik Juga.

The Boy's Adventure

Being an empoyee, expecially for fresh graduate, is so everything.  New experiences within professional environment sometimes makes something challenge. That was what i feel. You can imagine that before i graduate from my bachelor degree, exactly before graduational letter released, i was invited to join in an institution under the biggest community organization in the world which leads in manajing social fund to humanity. What a spectacular it is. And finaaly i took it immedietly after graduation, and start to work-learn there as well as adapted to new environment.
Single mont there, i had many sciences and experiences.  I could learn from every one there either good or bad. I got many things, including some unproffessional things. Unfortunately Those can’t be explained here because of some etics. Finally i found a thinking that i won’t develope if i still here. Because eveything here is not support to train me as a proffessional person. I felt this situation not just by me, but of course my friend from my almamater. We thought that we should to move to other environment for getting better life. Although it was a heavy choice. When i started working there, i never thought to leave early like this. I really wanna help and support directly this institution, because i have known this from several years ago.
After getting ordering later, for a job, although it was so far away there, in different island, after getting permition from my parents, i finally decided that it was what i propose. You know that the order of the job is excactly in line with my major and expertise. It is about agriculture.   In this job, i have to guide implementing the goverment program cooperated with IPB to cultivate soy bean for handred thausonds hectares in marginal land, a tide-subside land. That is a wide marginal land indonesia has, and why it is called as marginal land? Because those lands are very toxic for every plant. The dangerous aspects are caused by high pirit content there. In normal condition, pirit will be oxidated and will kill all plantations there. So that way, IPB inovated an new innovation by finding a technology to plant soy bean at these location. With modified ecology of land, that’s named water saturated  plantation technology found by Prof. Munif Gulamahdi, a lecturer of Faculty of Agriculture IPB. Therefore, effort to solve problems expecially for fullfil soy requirement at domestic can be sufficient. We will press number of soy import from other country.

I think it is what challenges me. In my opinion, i have to create my self prototype expecially in my field, agriculture. Besaides i can learn an fullfil my experiences need. You know that i really want to take master degree abroad, in the best agricultural university in the world. So that way, my step i have taken now i think is some thing relevant to my life. I just wanna ask you all the readers to pray me so that my adventure will not face any problems. I thanks god for give me opportunity to serve and give something to my beloved country. In the future, as Allah permition, i will be an expert in agricultural sector. amin

From Nothing to Something

"The outbreak of plant pest and diseases, called epidemy, doesn't occur suddenly, but everything start from the little thing. from the little thing big thing grow. that's an idiom describing how every spectacular thing always develops from the microthing. it's mean that we don't let to underestimate every little thing.

that idiom is related whith my life, that everything i gotten is combinated from many componens, not only by my hard effort, but also from all that support me by pray, support in materiality on morality.
